What it means
Abend 213 is issued for an error during OPEN of a data set on a direct access device, together with message IEC143I. The return code after the dash identifies the specific problem.
Two well-known cases: 213-30 means a second job tried to open a PDS for output with DISP=SHR while another output open was active, and the system blocked it to protect the directory; 213-74 means a PDSE member sharing conflict between users or systems.
Typical causes
- Two jobs or users writing to the same PDS at once with DISP=SHR (213-30).
- A PDSE member already open for update elsewhere (213-74).
- The data set or its label on the volume is not what the catalog or JCL says.
- Opening a data set in a way its organisation does not support.
How to fix it
- Read the IEC143I return code, DD name and data set name.
- For 213-30, use DISP=OLD for updates or move the library to a PDSE.
- For 213-74, find who has the member open and serialise the updates.
- Check the volume and catalog entries for the data set.
- Rerun once the conflict is cleared.
