S413

OPEN error on tape or DASD volume (IEC145I)SYSTEM ABEND

OPEN failed for a tape or disk data set, often because the volume could not be mounted or no volume serial was given.

MOST LIKELY

The volume is in use, reserved or on a device that cannot be used.

FIRST CHECK

Read the IEC145I return code, DD and volume.

What it means

Abend 413 comes with message IEC145I. It means OPEN could not get the volume or device it needed for the data set. The return code gives the reason.

Common return codes: 04 means no usable device was available for the volume; 18 means an input data set had no volume serial on the DD; 1C means the volume sequence number is higher than the number of volumes; 20 means a disk volume label or VTOC problem; 34 means LABEL=(n) above 1 for tape without a volume serial.

Typical causes

  • The volume is in use, reserved or on a device that cannot be used.
  • An uncataloged input data set with no VOL=SER on the DD.
  • A volume sequence number larger than the data set's volume count.
  • A tape density or recording mode the drive does not support.
  • Tape label or positioning errors.

How to fix it

  1. Read the IEC145I return code, DD and volume.
  2. Add or correct VOL=SER, or catalog the data set.
  3. Check the UNIT parameter points to a suitable device type.
  4. For volume or label errors, ask operations or the storage team to check the volume.
  5. Rerun once the volume and device problem is fixed.
