What it means

Abend A22 means a FORCE command ended the job. The system ends the job's address space and every task in it.

FORCE is the stronger form of cancel, used when a job does not respond to CANCEL. The job itself may have been fine; it was stopped from outside.

Typical causes

  • The job did not respond to CANCEL and the operator used FORCE.
  • The job was hung in a way that blocked a normal cancel.
  • An urgent need to free the address space or its resources.

How to fix it

  1. Ask operations why the job was forced.
  2. Find out why a normal cancel did not work, if that was the case.
  3. Correct any problem in the job and rerun it.
  4. If a dump is needed next time, ask for CANCEL with the DUMP option first.
